Learn upholstery skills at our evening, day and one week courses

About Us We make the highest quality upholstered furniture, as well as restore and re-upholstery antique furniture. Working here are Edward Crowther and his wife Jenny, together with a team of skilled upholsterers including Edward's son Ed Junior and a cabinet maker. Alongside our own work we run periodic courses in all aspects of upholstery, suited to beginners and experienced amateurs who wish to learn more about this fascinating craft. Our furniture starts with a traditionally hand built frame. Fine English Beech hardwood is kiln dried, cut, shaped, glued, screwed and doweled to ensure that lasting strength is built into each component. After that our upholsterers set to work. The way we make furniture is an uncompromising process, which has become an integral part of our reputation for excellence. Steel coil springs are fixed and hand-tied onto a jute webbed base. Natural fillings of horsehair and coir fibre are laid on Hessian and finished with specially prepared tailors' felt and cotton waddings. The overall comfort of each piece is of paramount importance and we therefore offer a selection of fillings from pure duck down, feather and down (our standard filling) to reflex fibre and feather wraps.
